✧ I was sitting with Ibn Umar when a man came to him and said: Did Uthman witness Badr? He said: No. He said: Did he witness the Pledge of Ridwan? He said: No. He said: Was he among those who turned away on the day the two armies met? He said: Yes. The man left, and it was said to him: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, this man will report that you disparaged Uthman. He said: Bring him back to me. Ibn Umar said to him: As for the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left him behind for his need, and allotted him a share, and he would not allot a share to an absent person. As for the Pledge of Ridwan, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent him to the people of Makkah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ extended his hands and wiped them over his own palm, saying: This is for Uthman. The hand of the Messenger of Allah is better than the hand of Uthman. As for the day the two armies met, Allah has pardoned them. Go and strive against me as hard as you can.
