✧ ʿUmar b. al-Khattab said, 'What do you think about the surplus of this wealth that remains with us?' The people said, 'O Commander of the Believers, we have kept you away from your family, your estate, and your trade, so it is yours.' He said to me, 'What do you say?' I said, 'They advised you.' He said, 'Speak.' I said, 'Why do you make your certainty into assumption and your knowledge into ignorance?' He said, 'You will come out of what you said, or I will punish you.' I said, 'Yes, I will come out of it. Do you remember when the Prophet of Allah ﷺ sent you as a tax collector, and you came to al-ʿAbbas b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib, and he withheld his alms from you? You said to me, "Come with me to the Prophet ﷺ, and we will inform him of what al-ʿAbbas did." So we went to the Prophet ﷺ and found him dejected, so we returned. Then we came back to him the next day and found him in good spirits, and you informed him of what al-ʿAbbas did. He said, "Do you not know that a man's uncle is the equal of his father?" And we mentioned to him the dejection we had seen on the first day and the good spirits we had seen on the second day. He said, "You came to me on the first day while one dinar from the alms remained with me, and what you saw was because of that; and you came to me today after I had distributed it, and that good spirits you saw was because of that."' ʿUmar said, 'You have spoken the truth. By Allah, I will thank you for the first and the last.' I said, 'O Commander of the Believers, why do you hasten the punishment and delay the thanks?'
