✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ returned from al-Hudaybiyyah, he stopped at a resting place and halted there at night. He said: Who will guard us? Abdullah said: I said: I will. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: You will sleep—saying that twice or thrice—then he said: Then you. So I guarded them until when it was near dawn, what the Messenger of God ﷺ said overtook me, and I did not wake except from the heat of the sun on our backs. The Messenger of God ﷺ arose, did as he usually does, then prayed the Morning Prayer. Then he said: If God had willed, you would not have slept through it, but if it should happen for those after you, then thus is it for one who sleeps or forgets.
