حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ خَازِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ:
كُنْتُ أَمْشِي مَعَ عَبْدِ اللهِ بِمِنًى فَلَقِيَ عُثْمَانَ فَقَامَ مَعَهُ يُحَدِّثُهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ عُثْمَانُ: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ أَلَا نُزَوِّجُكَ جَارِيَةً شَابَّةً لَعَلَّهَا تُذَكِّرُكَ مَا مَضَى مِنْ زَمَانِكَ ؟ قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ: أَمَا لَئِنْ قُلْتَ ذَاكَ، لَقَدْ قَالَ لَنَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: يَا مَعْشَرَ الشَّبَابِ، مَنِ اسْتَطَاعَ مِنْكُمُ الْبَاءَةَ فَلْيَتَزَوَّجْ، فَإِنَّهُ أَغَضُّ لِلْبَصَرِ وَأَحْصَنُ لِلْفَرْجِ، وَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَعَلَيْهِ بِالصَّوْمِ، فَإِنَّهُ لَهُ وِجَاءٌ

✧ I was walking with Abdullah in Mina when he met Uthman and stood with him talking. Uthman said to him: 'O Abu Abd al-Rahman, shall we marry you to a young slave girl, perhaps she will remind you of what has passed of your time?' Abdullah said: 'If you say that, then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: "O young men, whoever among you can afford marriage, let him marry, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity. Whoever cannot, then let him fast, for it is a shield for him."'

وسئل عن حديث علقمة عن عبد الله عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج الحديث فقال يرويه الأعمش والمغيرة ومنصور وحماد وأبو حمزة عن إبراهيم عن علقمة عن عبد الله وخالفهم أبو معشر فرواه عن إبراهيم عن علقمة وأسنده عن عثمان بن عفان وقول الأعمش ومن تابعه أصح
machine translationHe was also asked about the hadith of ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh, from the Prophet ﷺ: "Whoever among you is able to marry, let him marry" (the hadith). He said: It is narrated by al-Aʿmash, al-Mughīrah, Manṣūr, Ḥammād and Abū Ḥamzah, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, from ʿAbdullāh. Abū Maʿshar contradicted them: he narrated it from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah, and traced it back to ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān. The statement of al-Aʿmash and those who followed him is more correct (aṣaḥḥ).
