✧ On the day of Badr, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What do you think about these captives?' Abdullah b. Rawahah said: 'O Messenger of Allah, you are in a valley with much firewood, so set the valley ablaze upon them, then cast them into it.' Al-Abbas said: 'May Allah sever your kinship.' Umar said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are the leaders and chiefs of the polytheists. They denied you and fought you. Strike their necks.' Abu Bakr said: 'O Messenger of Allah, they are your kin and your people. Spare them so that Allah may save them through you from the Fire.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then went in to relieve himself. One group said: 'The correct view is what Umar said,' and another group said: 'The correct view is what Abu Bakr said.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and said: 'What do you say about these two men? Their likeness is that of brothers who came before them. Nuh said: "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth any dweller from among the disbelievers. If You leave them, they will mislead Your servants" (71:26–27). Musa said: "Our Lord, obliterate their wealth and harden their hearts so they will not believe until they see the painful punishment" (10:88). Ibrahim ﷺ said: "Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me — indeed, You are Forgiving and Merciful" (14:36). Isa said: "If You punish them, they are Your servants; and if You forgive them, indeed You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise" (5:118). You are a people in need, so let none of you return except with a ransom or a stroke of the neck.' Abdullah said: 'I said: Except Suhayl b. Bayda', for he should not be killed, for I heard him speaking of Islam.' He fell silent. No day ever came upon me that I feared more that stones would be thrown down upon me from the sky than that day, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Except Suhayl b. Bayda'.'
