حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ قَالَ:
لَقَدْ سَأَلَنِي الْيَوْمَ رَجُلٌ عَنْ شَيْءٍ مَا دَرَيْتُ مَا أَقُولُ لَهُ، قَالَ: أَرَأَيْتَ رَجُلًا مُؤْدِيًا نَشِيطًا حَرِيصًا عَلَى الْجِهَادِ، يَعْزِمُ عَلَيْنَا أُمَرَاؤُنَا فِي أَشْيَاءَ لَا نُحْصِيهَا، قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: وَاللهِ مَا أَدْرِي مَا أَقُولُ لَكَ إِلَّا أَنَّا كُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَلَعَلَّهُ أَنْ لَا يَأْمُرَنَا بِشَيْءٍ إِلَّا فَعَلْنَا، وَمَا أَشْبَهَ مَا غَبَرَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا كَالثَّغَبِ شُرِبَ صَفْوُهُ وَبَقِيَ كَدَرُهُ وَإِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ لَنْ يَزَالَ بِخَيْرٍ مَا اتَّقَى اللهَ، وَإِذَا حَاكَ فِي نَفْسِهِ شَيْءٌ أَتَى رَجُلًا فَسَأَلَهُ فَشَفَاهُ، وَايْمُ اللهِ لَيُوشِكَنَّ أَنْ لَا تَجِدُوهُ

✧ Today a man asked me about something I did not know what to say to him. He said: “What do you think about a man who is diligent, energetic, eager for jihad, while our commanders order us to do things we cannot count?” He said: I said: “By God, I do not know what to say to you except that we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ, and perhaps he would not command us anything but we did it. What remains of this world is like a muddy pool whose clear water has been drunk and whose dregs remain. One of you will remain in good as long as he fears God, and if something troubles his soul, he goes to a man and asks him, and he heals him. By God, it will soon be that you will not find him.”
