حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ الْحَجَّاجِ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلَّامٌ أَبُو الْمُنْذِرِ، حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ، عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ

أَنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ بَعَثَ رَجُلَيْنِ أَحَدُهُمَا: ابْنُ أُثَالِ بْنِ حَجْرٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَتَشْهَدَانِ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ ؟ قَالَا: نَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: آمَنْتُ بِاللهِ وَرُسُلِهِ، لَوْ كُنْتُ قَاتِلًا وَفْدًا قَتَلْتُكُمَا. فَبَيْنَمَا ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ بِالْكُوفَةِ إِذْ رُفِعَ إِلَيْهِ الرَّجُلُ الَّذِي مَعَ ابْنِ أُثَالٍ، وَهُوَ قَرِيبٌ لَهُ فَأَمَرَ بِقَتْلِهِ، فَقَالَ لِلْقَوْمِ: وَهَلْ تَدْرُونَ لِمَ قَتَلْتُ هَذَا ؟ قَالُوا: لَا نَدْرِي، فَقَالَ: إِنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ بَعَثَ هَذَا مَعَ ابْنِ أُثَالِ بْنِ حَجْرٍ، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: أَتَشْهَدَانِ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ ؟ قَالَا: نَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُسَيْلِمَةَ رَسُولُ اللهِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: آمَنْتُ بِاللهِ وَرُسُلِهِ، لَوْ كُنْتُ قَاتِلًا وَفْدًا قَتَلْتُكُمَا، قَالَ: فَلِذَلِكَ قَتَلْتُهُ، قَالَ أَبُو وَائِلٍ: وَكَانَ الرَّجُلُ يَوْمَئِذٍ كَافِرًا

✧ Musaylimah sent two men, one of them Ibn Uthal b. Hajar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Do you both bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah?' They said: 'We bear witness that Musaylimah is the Messenger of Allah.' The Prophet ﷺ said: 'I believe in Allah and His messengers. If I were to kill envoys, I would kill you both.' While Ibn Mas'ud was in Kufa, the man who was with Ibn Uthal, and he was a relative of his, was brought to him, so he ordered his execution. He said to the people: 'Do you know why I killed this man?' They said: 'We do not know.' He said: 'Musaylimah sent this man with Ibn Uthal b. Hajar. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Do you both bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah? They said: We bear witness that Musaylimah is the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet ﷺ said: I believe in Allah and His messengers. If I were to kill envoys, I would kill you both.' He said: 'So that is why I killed him.' Abu Wa'il said: 'And the man was a disbeliever at that time.'

    يرويه عاصم بن أبي النجود واختلف عنه فرواه الثوري والمسعودي وسلام أبو المنذر عن عاصم عن أبي وائل عن عبد الله وخالفهم أبو بكر بن عياش فرواه عن عاصم عن أبي وائل عن أبي معير السعدي عن ابن مسعود وحدث بهذا الخبر هيثم الدوري عن شيخ له عن أبي عاصم عن الثوري عن الأعمش عن أبي وائل وذلك وهم والصواب عن الثوري عن عاصم

    machine translationʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Al-Thawrī, al-Masʿūdī and Sallām Abū al-Mundhir narrated it from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbdullāh. Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh differed from them, and narrated it from ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from Abū Muʿayr al-Saʿdī, from Ibn Masʿūd. Haytham al-Dūrī related this report from a shaykh of his, from Abū ʿĀṣim, from al-Thawrī, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, and that is an error (wahm); the correct version is from al-Thawrī, from ʿĀṣim.
