✧ There was a man at the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ who would go on expeditions with the Messenger of God. When he returned and dismounted from his riding beast, he would head to the mosque of the Messenger and pray in it, prolonging the prayer, until some of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ came to think he had merit over them. One day he passed by while the Messenger of God ﷺ was sitting among his Companions. Some of his Companions said to him: O Prophet of God, this is that man. Either the Prophet of God sent for him, or he came of his own accord. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw him approaching, he said: By the One in whose hand is my soul, between his eyes is a mark from Satan. When he stood before the assembly, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to him: When you stood before the assembly, did you say to yourself: There is no one in the group better than me? He said: Yes. Then he left and went to a corner of the mosque, drew a line with his foot, then placed his heels together and stood to pray. The Messenger of God said: Which of you will go to this man and kill him? Abu Bakr stood up. The Messenger of God said: Did you kill the man? He said: I found him praying, so I was in awe of him. The Messenger of God said: Which of you will go to this man and kill him? Umar said: I will. He took the sword, but found him standing in prayer, so he returned. The Messenger of God said to Umar: Did you kill the man? He said: O Prophet of God, I found him praying, so I was in awe of him. The Messenger of God said: Which of you will go to this man and kill him? Ali said: I will. The Messenger of God said: You are the one for him if you catch him. Ali went but did not find him, so he returned. The Messenger of God said: Did you kill the man? He said: I do not know which way he went in the land. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: This is the first horn to emerge from my community. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: If you had killed him, or if he had killed him, no two in my community would have differed. The Children of Israel split into seventy-one sects, and this community—meaning his community—will split into seventy-two sects, all of them in the Fire except one. We said: O Prophet of God, who is that one sect? He said: The main body.
