حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ سَلِمَةَ، قَالَ:

دَخَلْتُ عَلَى عَلِيٍّ، أَنَا وَرَجُلَانِ: رَجُلٌ مِنَّا، وَرَجُلٌ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدٍ، أَحْسَبُ، فَبَعَثَهُمَا وَجْهًا، فَقَالَ: إِنَّكُمَا عِلْجَانِ فَعَالِجَا عَنْ دِينِكُمَا، ثُمَّ دَخَلَ الْمَخْرَجَ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ، فَأَخَذَ حَفْنَةً مِنْ مَاءٍ فَتَمَسَّحَ بِهَا، ثُمَّ جَاءَ يَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ، فَرَأَى أَنَّا أَنْكَرْنَا ذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ يَأْتِي الْخَلَاءَ فَيَقْضِي الْحَاجَةَ، ثُمَّ يَخْرُجُ فَيَأْكُلُ مَعَنَا الْخُبْزَ وَاللَّحْمَ لَا يَحْجُبُهُ - وَرُبَّمَا قَالَ: لَا يَحْجِزُهُ - عَنِ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ، لَيْسَ الْجَنَابَةُ، أَوِ الْجِنَازَةُ

Translation

✧ I entered upon ‘Ali, I and two men: a man from among us and a man from Banu Asad, I think. He sent the two of them on a mission and said: “You two are sturdy fellows, so strive for your religion.” Then he entered the privy and then came out, took a handful of water and wiped himself with it, then came reciting the Quran. He saw that we disapproved of that, so ‘Ali said: “The Messenger of God ﷺ used to go to the privy and relieve himself, then come out and eat bread and meat with us. Nothing prevented him—or perhaps he said: nothing withheld him—from the Quran except major ritual impurity or a funeral.”
