✧ He and his father entered upon Anas b. Malik in Madinah during the time of 'Umar b. 'Abd al-'Aziz, when he was governor. He prayed a light prayer, as if it were the prayer of a traveler or close to it. When he said the salam, he said: "May Allah have mercy on you. Do you think this prayer is the prescribed prayer or something you prayed voluntarily?" He said: "It is the prescribed prayer, and it is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I did not miss anything except something I forgot. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to say: 'Do not make things hard on yourselves, lest Allah make things hard on you. A people made things hard on themselves, so Allah made things hard on them. Those are their remnants in the monasteries and hermitages: and monasticism they invented; We did not prescribe it for them.' Then they went out the next morning and said: "Let us ride and look and take a lesson." He said: "Yes." So they all rode, and behold, there were deserted dwellings whose people had perished, become extinct, and been expelled, collapsed upon their roofs. They said: "Do you recognize these dwellings?" He said: "How well I know them and their people! These are the people of dwellings whom transgression and envy destroyed. Indeed, envy extinguishes the light of good deeds, and transgression confirms that or belies it. The eye commits adultery, as do the palm, the foot, the hand, and the tongue, and the private part confirms that or belies it."
