حَدَّثَنَا هُدْبَةُ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ الْمُغِيرَةِ، قَالَ: قَالَ ثَابِتٌ، قَالَ أَنَسٌ:
لَمَّا انْقَضَتْ عِدَّةُ زَيْنَبَ، قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ لِزَيْدٍ: اذْهَبْ إِلَيْهَا فَاذْكُرْهَا عَلَيَّ، قَالَ: فَانْطَلَقَ زَيْدٌ فَأَتَاهَا وَهِيَ تَخْتَبِزُ عَجِينَتَهَا، قَالَ: فَعَظُمَتْ فِي صَدْرِي، فَمَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَنْ أَنْظُرَ إِلَيْهَا حِينَ عَرَفْتُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَدْ ذَكَرَهَا، فَوَلَّيْتُهَا ظَهْرِي وَنَكَصْتُ عَلَى عَقِبَيَّ، قُلْتُ: يَا زَيْنَبُ أَبْشِرِي، رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ ذَكَرَكِ، قَالَتْ: مَا أَنَا بِصَانِعَةٍ شَيْئًا حَتَّى أُوَامِرَ رَبِّي، فَقَامَتْ إِلَى مَسْجِدِهَا وَنَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ بِغَيْرِ إِذْنٍ. قَالَ أَنَسٌ: فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ أَطْعَمَنَا عَلَيْهَا الْخُبْزَ وَاللَّحْمَ حَتَّى امْتَدَّ النَّهَارُ، قَالَ: فَخَرَجَ النَّاسُ وَبَقِيَ رَهْطٌ فِي الْبَيْتِ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ، قَدْ أَنِسَ بِهِمُ الْحَدِيثُ، فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَاتَّبَعْتُهُ، فَجَعَلَ يَتَتَبَّعُ حُجَرَ نِسَائِهِ يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِنَّ، وَجَعَلْنَ يَقُلْنَ: كَيْفَ وَجَدْتَ أَهْلَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ فَلَا أَدْرِي أَنَا أَخْبَرْتُهُ أَنَّ الْقَوْمَ قَدْ خَرَجُوا، أَوْ أُخْبِرَ، فَانْطَلَقَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ حَتَّى دَخَلَ الْبَيْتَ، فَذَهَبْتُ أَدْخُلُ مَعَهُ فَأَلْقَى السِّتْرَ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَهُ، وَنَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْحِجَابِ، وَوُعِظَ الْقَوْمُ بِمَا وُعِظُوا بِهِ

✧ When Zaynab's waiting period ended, the Messenger of God ﷺ said to Zayd: 'Go to her and mention me to her.' He said: 'Zayd set off and came to her while she was baking her dough.' He said: 'She became magnified in my chest, and I could not look at her once I knew that the Messenger of God ﷺ had mentioned her. So I turned my back to her and stepped backward. I said: "O Zaynab, rejoice; the Messenger of God ﷺ has mentioned you." She said: "I will do nothing until I consult my Lord." She rose to her place of prayer, and the Qur'an was revealed. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ entered upon her without permission.' Anas said: 'I saw the Messenger of God ﷺ feed us bread and meat on her account until the day extended.' He said: 'The people went out and a group remained in the house conversing, and the conversation had made them comfortable. The Messenger of God ﷺ went out and I followed him. He began to go around the rooms of his wives, greeting them, and they began to say: "How did you find your wife, O Messenger of God?" I do not know whether I informed him that the people had left or whether he was informed. The Messenger of God ﷺ went on until he entered the house. I went to enter with him, and he let down the curtain between me and him. The verse of the veil was revealed, and the people were admonished with what they were admonished.'
