حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا شَيْبَانُ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسٍ

أَنَّ يَهُودِيًّا أَتَى عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ، فَقَالَ: السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، فَرَدَّ الْقَوْمُ، فَقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ: هَلْ تَدْرُونَ مَا قَالَ ؟ قَالُوا: اللهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ، سَلَّمَ يَا نَبِيَّ اللهِ، قَالَ: لَا، وَلَكِنَّهُ قَالَ: كَذَا وَكَذَا، رُدُّوهُ عَلَيَّ، قَالَ: فَرَدُّوهُ عَلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: أَقُلْتَ السَّامُ عَلَيْكُمْ ؟ قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ: إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا: وَعَلَيْكَ، قَالَ: عَلَيْكَ مَا قُلْتَ وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللهُ

Translation

✧ A Jew came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Al-sam 'alaykum (death be upon you).' The people replied, so the Prophet of God ﷺ said: 'Do you know what he said?' They said: 'God and His Messenger know best. He greeted, O Prophet of God.' He said: 'No, but he said such and such. Bring him back to me.' He said: So they brought him back, and he said: 'Did you say al-sam 'alaykum?' He said: 'Yes.' The Prophet of God ﷺ then said: 'When one of the People of the Book greets you, say: Wa 'alayk (and upon you).' He said: 'Upon you be what you said, and when they come to you they greet you with what God has not greeted you with.'
