✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ in a gathering when a Jew passed by and greeted him. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ responded to him. He said, "Do you know what he said?" They said, "Yes, he greeted." He said, "He said, 'As-sam alaykum'—that is, 'may you be destroyed in your religion.' Return it to him." They said, "How?" He said, "Say, 'As-sam alayk' (may death be upon you)." The Prophet ﷺ said, "When the People of the Book greet you, say, 'And upon you'—that is, 'upon you what you said.'"
