حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَمَّارٍ، حَدَّثَنَا الْمُعَافَى بْنُ عِمْرَانَ، عَنْ مُخْتَارٍ التَّمَّارِ، عَنْ أَبِي مَطَرٍ الْبَصْرِيِّ، قَالَ:
كُنْتُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ، فَانْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى سُوقِ الْكَبِيرِ فَتَوَسَّمَ شَيْخًا مِنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ: يَا شَيْخُ، أَحْسِنْ بَيْعَتِي فِي قَمِيصٍ بِثَلَاثَةِ دَرَاهِمَ، قَالَ: نَعَمْ، يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَلَمَّا عَرَفَهُ لَمْ يَشْتَرِ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا، وَأَتَى غُلَامًا حَدَثًا فَاشْتَرَى مِنْهُ قَمِيصًا بِثَلَاثَةِ دَرَاهِمَ فَلَبِسَهُ مِنَ الرُّصْغَيْنِ إِلَى الْكَعْبَيْنِ، يَقُولُ فِي لِبَاسِهِ: الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِي رَزَقَنِي مِنَ الرِّيَاشِ مَا أَتَجَمَّلُ بِهِ فِي النَّاسِ وَأُوَارِي بِهِ عَوْرَتِي، فَقَالَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ: شَيْئًا تُحَدِّثُهُ عَنْ نَفْسِكَ، أَوْ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ ؟ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ يَقُولُ ذَلِكَ إِذَا لَبِسَ ثَوْبًا
Translation

✧ I was with Ali, and we came to the big market. He recognized an old man among them and said: O old man, give me a good sale on a shirt for three dirhams. He said: Yes, O Commander of the Faithful. When the old man recognized him, Ali did not buy anything from him. He went to a young boy and bought a shirt from him for three dirhams. He put it on, and it reached from his wrists to his ankles, and he said about his garment: Praise be to God who has provided me with clothing with which I beautify myself among people and cover my private parts. The Muslims said: Is this something you say of yourself or from the Prophet ﷺ? He said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say that when he put on a garment.
