✧ Najdah al-Haruri wrote to Ibn ‘Abbas asking him about the share of the near relatives—for whom is it? About killing children, mentioning in his letter that the learned man, the companion of Musa, had killed the boy. And about women—did they attend war with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and was a share allotted to them? Yazid said: I wrote Ibn ‘Abbas's letter for him, and he wrote back: You wrote asking me about the share of the near relatives—for whom is it? It is for us, the People of the House. ‘Umar b. al-Khattab invited us to use it to marry our unmarried, to serve our needy, and to pay the debts of our debtors, but we refused unless he handed it over to us, and he refused, so we left it. You wrote asking me about killing children and mentioned that the learned man, the companion of Musa, killed the boy. If you knew about children what that learned man knew, you would kill. But you do not know, so avoid them, for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade killing them. You wrote asking me about women—did they attend war with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and was a share allotted to them? They did attend with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but no share was allotted to them; rather, he gave them a small amount.
