✧ Tamim al-Dari and Adi b. Badda used to travel to Makkah, and a man from Quraysh of Banu Sahm accompanied them. He died in a land where there was no Muslim, and he bequeathed his estate to the two of them. When they arrived, they handed it to his family, but they concealed a silver bowl inlaid with gold that had been with him. They said, 'We did not see it.' They were brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and he made them swear by Allah that they had not concealed it nor had knowledge of it, and then he released them. Afterwards the bowl was found with some people of Makkah, who said, 'We bought it from Tamim al-Dari and Adi b. Badda.' The heirs of the Sahmi stood up and took the bowl, and two men from among them swore by Allah: 'This bowl is the bowl of our companion, and our testimony is more rightful than their testimony, and we have not transgressed; if we did, then we would be among the wrongdoers.' And these two verses were revealed: 'O you who believe, testimony among you when death approaches one of you...' to the end of the verse.
