✧ We came to Jabir b. 'Abd Allah while he was among the Banu Salima, and we asked him about the farewell pilgrimage of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He told us that the Messenger of God ﷺ stayed in Madinah for nine years without performing Hajj. Then it was announced to the people that the Messenger of God ﷺ would perform Hajj that year. Many people came to Madinah, all seeking to follow the Messenger of God ﷺ and do what he did. The Messenger of God ﷺ set out when five days remained of Dhu al-Qa'da, and we set out until we reached Dhu al-Hulayfa, where Asma' gave birth to Muhammad b. Abi Bakr. She sent a message to the Messenger of God ﷺ asking, 'What should I do?' He said, 'Perform ghusl, wrap yourself with a cloth, and then enter ihram.' Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went on until his she-camel stood him upright on al-Bayda', and he began the talbiya with tawhid: 'Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk, inna al-hamda wa-l-ni'mata laka wa-l-mulk, la sharika lak.' The people also began the talbiya, and they added 'Dha al-Ma'arij' and similar words, while the Prophet ﷺ heard them and said nothing to them. I looked and extended my gaze in front of the Messenger of God ﷺ, and there were riders and walkers, and behind him the same, and on his right the same, and on his left the same. Jabir said: The Messenger of God ﷺ was among us, and the Qur'an was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation, and whatever he did we did. He said: We set out intending nothing but Hajj. When we reached the Ka'ba, the Prophet of God ﷺ touched the Black Stone, then did ramal for three circuits and walked for four. When he finished, he went to the Station of Ibrahim and prayed two rak'as behind it, and he recited: 'And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer.' He said: In those two rak'as he recited Surah al-Ikhlas and Surah al-Kafirun. Then he touched the Stone, then went out to al-Safa and said, 'We begin with what God began with,' and he recited: 'Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwa are among the symbols of God.' Then he climbed al-Safa until he could see the House, and he said takbir, then said: 'There is no god but God alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things. There is no god but God alone. He fulfilled His promise, aided His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.' Then he supplicated and returned to this same speech. Then he descended, and when his feet reached the bottom of the valley he ran, and when he ascended he walked, until he came to al-Marwa and climbed it, and when he could see the House he said upon it the same as he had said upon al-Safa. When he was on the seventh circuit at al-Marwa, he said: 'O people, if I had known beforehand what I now know, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal, and I would have made it an 'umra. So whoever among you does not have a sacrificial animal should exit ihram and make it an 'umra.' So all the people exited ihram. Suraqa b. Ju'shum said, 'O Messenger of God, is this for this year of ours or forever?' He said: The Prophet ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said, 'Rather, forever,' three times. 'The 'umra has entered into the Hajj until the Day of Resurrection.' 'Ali arrived from Yemen, bringing with him a sacrificial animal, and the Messenger of God ﷺ had brought a sacrificial animal with him from Madinah. There was Fatima, who had exited ihram and put on dyed clothes and applied kohl, and she said, 'My father commanded me.' 'Ali objected to that. He said: Ja'far said: This phrase was not mentioned by Jabir b. 'Abd Allah; 'Ali said in Kufa: I went away, agitated, to seek confirmation from the Messenger of God ﷺ about what Fatima had mentioned. I said, 'O Messenger of God, Fatima has exited ihram, put on dyed clothes, applied kohl, and said, "My father commanded me."' He said, 'She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. I commanded her to do that.' Then he returned to the hadith of Jabir and said to 'Ali, 'With what did you enter ihram?' He said: I said, 'O God, I enter ihram with what Your Messenger entered ihram, and I have the sacrificial animal with me.' He said, 'Then do not exit ihram.' He said: The total number of sacrificial animals brought by the Prophet ﷺ and by 'Ali was one hundred. The Messenger of God ﷺ slaughtered sixty-three with his own hand, and he gave 'Ali the rest to slaughter, and he made him a partner in his sacrificial animal. The Messenger of God ﷺ ordered that a piece be taken from each camel, and they were put in a pot, and they ate from its meat and drank from its broth. The Messenger of God ﷺ said, 'I have slaughtered here, and Mina is all a place of slaughter.' Then he stood and said, 'I have stood here, and 'Arafa is all a place of standing.' And he stood at al-Muzdalifa and said, 'I have stood here, and al-Muzdalifa is all a place of standing.'
