✧ I was with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a bearer of good news came to him from a military expedition he had sent, informing him of the victory Allah granted his expedition and the conquest Allah opened for them. He said: O Messenger of Allah, while we were pursuing the enemy and Allah had defeated them, I caught up with a man with my sword. When he sensed that the sword had reached him, he turned while running and said: I am a Muslim, I am a Muslim. But I killed him, and he was only seeking protection, O Prophet of Allah. He said: Why did you not split open his heart to see whether he was truthful or lying? He said: If I had split open his heart, the heart would not have informed me; is his heart anything but a lump of flesh? He said: You killed him; you did not know what was in his heart, nor did you believe his tongue. He said: O Messenger of Allah, ask forgiveness for me. He said: I will not ask forgiveness for you. They buried him, but he appeared on the surface of the earth three times. When his people saw that, they were ashamed and humiliated by what had happened to him, so they carried him and threw him into a ravine among those ravines.
