حَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ قَالَ:
تَذَاكَرْنَا لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ، فَأَتَيْنَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِيَّ، فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: يَا أَبَا سَعِيدٍ، هَلْ سَمِعْتَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَذْكُرُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ ؟ فَقَالَ: اعْتَكَفَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوْسَطَ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ، وَاعْتَكَفْنَا مَعَهُ. فَلَمَّا كَانَ صَبِيحَةُ عِشْرِينَ رَجَعَ وَرَجَعْنَا مَعَهُ، فَنَامَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَرَأَى لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْمَنَامِ، ثُمَّ أُنْسِيَهَا، فَخَرَجَ عَشِيَّةً فَخَطَبَنَا، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ لَيْلَةَ الْقَدْرِ فِي الْمَنَامِ، ثُمَّ أُنْسِيتُهَا، وَأُرَانِي تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ أَسْجُدُ فِي مَاءٍ وَطِينٍ. فَمَنْ كَانَ اعْتَكَفَ مَعَنَا فَلْيَرْجِعْ إِلَى مُعْتَكَفِهِ، ابْغُوهَا فِي الْعَشْرِ الْأَوَاخِرِ فِي الْوِتْرِ مِنْهَا، فَإِنَّ اللهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ الْوِتْرَ ". قَالَ: فَرَجَعْنَا فَهَاجَتْ عَلَيْنَا السَّمَاءُ تِلْكَ الْعَشِيَّةَ، وَكَانَ سَقْفُ الْمَسْجِدِ عَرِيشًا مِنْ جَرِيدِ النَّخْلِ، فَاعْتَكَفَ، فَوَالَّذِي أَكْرَمَهُ وَأَنْزَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْكِتَابَ لَرَأَيْتُهُ لَيْلَةَ إِحْدَى وَعِشْرِينَ، وَإِنَّ جَبْهَتَهُ وَأَرْنَبَةَ أَنْفِهِ فِي الْمَاءِ وَالطِّينِ

✧ We discussed the Night of Decree among ourselves, so we went to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. I said to him, "O Abu Sa'id, did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the Night of Decree?" He said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ observed i'tikaf during the middle ten days of Ramadan, and we observed i'tikaf with him. On the morning of the twentieth he returned, and we returned with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ slept and saw the Night of Decree in a dream, but then he was made to forget it. He came out in the evening and addressed us, saying, 'I saw the Night of Decree in a dream, but then I was made to forget it, and I saw myself prostrating that night in water and mud. Whoever observed i'tikaf with us should return to his place of i'tikaf. Seek it in the last ten nights, in the odd nights among them, for Allah is odd and loves the odd.'" He said, "So we returned, and the sky poured rain upon us that evening. The roof of the mosque was an arbor of palm branches. He observed i'tikaf, and by the One who honored him and sent down upon him the Book, I saw him on the night of the twenty-first, with his forehead and the tip of his nose in water and mud."

machine translationAbū ʿUmar said: Regarding the twenty-first night, there is the hadith of Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, from the narration of Mālik and others; regarding the twenty-third night, the hadith of ʿAbdullāh b. Unays al-Juhanī, which has already been mentioned; and regarding the twenty-seventh night, the hadith of Ubayy b. Kaʿb and the hadith of Muʿāwiyah. All of them are sound (ṣaḥīḥ).
