✧ When the expedition to Tabūk took place, the people suffered from hunger. They said: “O Messenger of God, if you would permit us, we could slaughter our water-carrying camels and eat and use the fat.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them: “Do so.” Then ʿUmar came and said: “O Messenger of God, if they do that, the riding animals will become scarce. But call them to bring the surplus of their provisions, then pray for blessing over them, perhaps God will place blessing in that.” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ called for a leather mat and spread it out, then called for the surplus of their provisions. He said: A man would come with a handful of corn, another with a handful of dates, another with a piece of bread, until something of that gathered on the mat. He said: He prayed for blessing over it, then said: “Take into your vessels.” He said: They took into their vessels until they left no vessel in the army but they filled it. He said: They ate until they were full. He said: And a surplus remained. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “I bear witness that there is no god but God and that I am the Messenger of God. No servant meets God with this, without doubting, but he will be veiled from Paradise.”
