✧ When the expedition of Tabuk took place, the people suffered from hunger. They said: O Messenger of God, if only you would permit us to slaughter our camels used for carrying water, so we could eat and use their fat. He said: Do it. Then Umar came and said: O Messenger of God, if you do that, the riding animals will become few. But invite them to bring their surplus provisions, then pray to God for blessing over them; perhaps God will place in that—I think he said—good. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ called for a leather mat, then invited them to bring their surplus provisions. A man would come with a handful of millet, another with a handful of dates, and another with a piece of bread, until it gathered on the mat. The Messenger of God ﷺ prayed for blessing for them, and they did not leave any container in the army except that they filled it, and they ate and were satiated. And a surplus remained. The Prophet ﷺ then said: I bear witness that there is no god but God. No servant will meet God with it and be veiled from Paradise.
