✧ Ali sent to the Messenger of God ﷺ from Yemen a piece of gold in tanned leather that had not been purified. He divided it among four men: Zayd al-Khayl, al-Aqra' b. Habis, Uyaynah b. Hisn, and Alqamah b. Ulathah. Some people from the Muhajirun and the Ansar said: "We are more entitled to this." This reached him and distressed him, and he said: "Do you not trust me, while I am the trustee of the One in heaven? The news of heaven comes to me morning and evening." Then a man with protruding eyes, prominent cheeks, a receding forehead, a thick beard, a shaved head, and a raised lower garment stood up to him and said: "O Messenger of God, fear God." The Prophet ﷺ said: "Woe to you! Am I not the most entitled of the people of the earth to fear God?" Then he turned away. Khalid, the sword of God, stood up and said: "O Messenger of God, shall I strike his neck?" He said: "No, for perhaps he may pray." He said: "If he prays, he says with his tongue what is not in his heart." He said: "I have not been commanded to split open people's hearts or split open their bellies." The Prophet ﷺ looked at him as he was departing and said: "From the stock of this one there will come a people who recite the Book of God, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will pass through the religion as an arrow passes through the game." Umarah said: "I think he said: 'If I catch them, I will kill them as Thamud was killed.'"
