✧ I was present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn while he was distributing a share among the people. A man from Banu Umayyah stood up and said to him: "Act justly, O Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "Then I would have failed and lost if I were not just. Who will act justly? Woe to you!" Umar b. al-Khattab asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to kill him, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "I am not one who kills my companions. People will emerge saying the like of his saying; they recite the Quran but it does not pass their collarbones. They exit the religion as the arrow exits the target." He took an arrow and looked at its binding but saw nothing on it; then he looked at its head—meaning the shaft—but saw nothing on it; then he looked at its feathers but saw nothing on it. It outran the dung and blood. Their mark is a man whose hand is like a woman's breast, like a piece of flesh quivering, on which there are hairs like the forelock of a beast of prey." Abu Sa'id said: "I was present at this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn, and I was present with Ali on the day he killed them at Nahrawan." He said: "Ali searched for him but did not find him." He said: "Then he found him later under a wall with this description." Ali said: "Which of you knows this man?" A man from the people said: "We know him. This is Hurqus, and his mother is here." He said: "Ali sent for his mother and said to her: 'Who is this?' She said: 'I do not know, O Commander of the Faithful, except that I used to graze sheep of mine in the Jahiliyyah at al-Rabadhah, and something like a shade covered me, and I conceived from it and gave birth to this.'"
