What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

أصله البئر جبار ولكنه صحفه معمر

machine translationIts origin is "the well is without liability (jubār)", but Maʿmar misread it (ṣaḥḥafahu).

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

في قول ابن معين هذا نظر اي ان معمر صحف البئر للنار ولا يسلم له حتى يتضح

machine translationThere is something to examine in this statement of Ibn Maʿīn, namely that Maʿmar misread "al-bi'r" (the well) as "al-nār" (the fire). It is not to be accepted from him until it is made clear.

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

هذا باطل ليس من هذا شيء

machine translationThis is false (bāṭil); there is nothing of this.

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

هذه الرواية ليست بشيء لم تكن في الكتب وهي باطلة ليست صحيحة

machine translationThis narration is nothing. It was not in the books, and it is false (bāṭil), not sound.

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579

  • Khaṭṭābī

لم أزل أسمع أهل الحديث يقولون غلط فيه عبد الرزاق إنما هو البئر جبار

machine translationI kept hearing the people of hadith say: ʿAbd al-Razzāq made a mistake in it; it is only "the well is without liability (jubār)".

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
  • Ibn Ḥazm

هذا حديث صحيح تقوم به الحجة

machine translationThis is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith, by which proof is established.

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
  • ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm al-Mudhirī

عبد الملك الصنعاني ضعفه هشام بن يوسف وأبو الفتح الأزدي وقال بعضهم هو تصحيف البئر فإن أهل اليمن يميلون النار ويكسرون النون فسمعه بعضهم على الإمالة فكتبه بالياء فنقلوه مصحفا

machine translationʿAbd al-Malik al-Ṣanʿānī was declared weak (ḍaʿīf) by Hishām b. Yūsuf and Abū al-Fatḥ al-Azdī. Some of them said it is a misreading (taṣḥīf) of "al-bi'r" (the well), because the people of Yemen incline the pronunciation of "al-nār" (imālah) and pronounce the nūn with a kasrah. So some of them heard it with the imālah and wrote it with a yā', and they transmitted it as a misreading.

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
  • Khaṭṭābī

لم أزل أسمع أصحاب الحديث يقولون غلط فيه عبد الرزاق إنما هو البئر جبار حتى وجدته لأبي داود عن عبد الملك الصنعاني عن معمر فدل على أن الحديث لم ينفرد به عبد الرزاق

machine translationI kept hearing the people of hadith say: ʿAbd al-Razzāq made a mistake in it; it is only "the well is without liability (jubār)", until I found it in Abū Dāwūd, from ʿAbd al-Malik al-Ṣanʿānī, from Maʿmar. This indicates that ʿAbd al-Razzāq was not alone in transmitting the hadith.

in سنن أبي داود, p. 4579
