What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThis is false (bāṭil); there is nothing of this.

  • Yaḥyá b. Maʿīn

machine translationIts origin is "the well is without liability (jubār)", but Maʿmar misread it (ṣaḥḥafahu).

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationThere is something to examine in this statement of Ibn Maʿīn, namely that Maʿmar misread "al-bi'r" (the well) as "al-nār" (the fire). It is not to be accepted from him until it is made clear.

  • Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal

machine translationThis narration is nothing. It was not in the books, and it is false (bāṭil), not sound.

  • Khaṭṭābī

machine translationI kept hearing the people of hadith say: ʿAbd al-Razzāq made a mistake in it; it is only "the well is without liability (jubār)".

  • Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationThis is a sound (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith, by which proof is established.
