Show the chain

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ as saying: Do not go out to meet riders to conduct business with them ; none of you must buy in opposition to one another; and do not tie up the udders of camels and sheep, for he who buys them after that has been done has two courses open to him after milking them: he may keep them if he is pleased with them, or he may return them along with a sa' of dates is he is displeased with them.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationAn established, authentic (ṣaḥīḥ) hadith, which none of the scholars of hadith rejects, and its meaning is sound according to the fundamentals of the Sunnah.

machine translationAl-Qaʿnabī mentioned, from Ashhab's hearing from Mālik, that he was asked about the saying of the Messenger of God ﷺ: "Whoever buys a muṣarrāh [an animal whose milk was held back] has the better of the two options after he milks it: if he wishes he keeps it, and if he wishes he returns it along with a ṣāʿ of dates." He said: "I heard that, but it is not established, and the Muwaṭṭaʾ is not based on it. If that were not so, the milk would belong to him in return for the fodder he provided, and he would bear responsibility." It was said to him: "We see that you consider the hadith weak." He said: "Everything is put in its proper place. It is not in the Muwaṭṭaʾ and it is not established, though I did hear it."

  • Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr

machine translationGod knows best the soundness of this narration from Mālik, and only a trustworthy (thiqah) person narrated it from him. But with the differences among the narrators of the hadith, according to the people of knowledge of hadith, it is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) and established.
