Sunan Abi Dawud 292
The Narrations That State The Woman With Istihadah Should Perform Ghusl For Every Prayer
Show the chain

Umm Habibah had a prolonged flow of blood during the time of Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He commanded her to take bath for every prayer. The narrator then transmitted the tradition (in full). Abu Dawud said: It has also been narrated by Abu al-Walid al-Tayalisi, but I did not hear him. He reported it from 'Aishah through a different chain of narrators. 'Aishah said: Zainab daughter of Jahsh had a prolonged flow of blood. The Prophet ﷺ said to her: Take bath for every prayer. The narrator then reported the tradition (in full). Abu Dawud said: The version transmitted by 'Abd al-Samad from Sulaiman b. Kathir has: "Perform ablution for every prayer." This is a misunderstanding on the part of 'Abd al-Samad. The correct version is the one narrated by Abu al-Walid.

machine translationThere is much disagreement among the narrators from al-Zuhrī regarding this hadith. At times he narrates it from ʿAmrah from ʿĀʾishah, at times from ʿUrwah from ʿĀʾishah, at times from ʿUrwah and ʿAmrah from ʿĀʾishah, and at times from ʿUrwah from Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaysh. Most of the students of Ibn Shihāb say in it: from ʿUrwah and ʿAmrah from ʿĀʾishah, that Umm Ḥabībah bint Jaḥsh, the in-law of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was married to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, had irregular bleeding (istuḥīḍat). This is how they report it from Ibn Shihāb in this hadith: Umm Ḥabībah, without mentioning Fāṭimah bint Abī Ḥubaysh. The hadith of Ibn Shihāb on this subject is inconsistent (muḍṭarib).
