The verdict that water (bath) is necessary when there is emission given by the people (in the early days of Islam) was due to the concession granted by the Messenger of Allah in the beginning of Islam. He then commanded to take a bath (in such a case). Abu Dawud said: By Abu Ghassan is meant Muhammad b. mutarrif.

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationIbn Khuzaymah and Ibn Ḥibbān graded it sound (ṣaḥīḥ). Al-Ismāʿīlī said: It is sound (ṣaḥīḥ) according to the criterion of al-Bukhārī. So he said, but it seems he was not aware of its defect (ʿillah), for they differed over whether al-Zuhrī heard it from Sahl. Yes, Abū Dāwūd and also Ibn Khuzaymah reported it through Abū Ḥāzim from Sahl. This chain also has another defect, which Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned. In sum, it is a chain fit to be used as evidence.
