Translation

✧ The Prophet ﷺ rode a donkey on a packsaddle under which was a Fadak velvet cloth, and he mounted Usamah b. Zayd behind him while he was visiting Sa'd b. Ubadah among Banu al-Harith b. al-Khazraj — that was before the battle of Badr — until he passed by a gathering in which there were Muslims, polytheists who worshipped idols, and Jews, and among them was Abd Allah b. Ubayy b. Salul, and in the gathering was Abd Allah b. Rawahah. When the dust raised by the animal covered the gathering, Abd Allah b. Ubayy covered his nose with his cloak and said: 'Do not raise dust on us.' The Prophet ﷺ greeted them, then stopped and dismounted, called them to Allah, and recited the Qur'an to them. Abd Allah b. Ubayy said to him: 'O man, nothing is better than this — if what you say is true. So do not disturb us in our gathering; return to your mount, and whoever of us comes to you, relate to him.' Ibn Rawahah said: 'Come to us in our gatherings, for we love that.' The Muslims, polytheists, and Jews insulted each other until they were about to leap at one another. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept calming them, then mounted his animal and entered upon Sa'd b. Ubadah and said: 'O Sa'd, did you not hear what Abu Hubab said?' — meaning Abd Allah b. Ubayy — 'He said such and such.' Sa'd said: 'Pardon him, O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and overlook. By Allah, Allah has given you what He has given you, and the people of this settlement had agreed to crown him' — meaning make him king — 'and bind him with the headband. When Allah, Blessed and Exalted, rejected that with the truth that He gave you, he choked on that, and so he did to you what you saw.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pardoned him.
