عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ السَّخْتِيَانِيِّ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ قَالَ:
لَمَّا كَانَ يَوْمُ الْقَادِسِيَّةِ كَانَ عَلَى الْخَيْلِ قَيْسُ بْنُ مَكْشُوحٍ الْعَبْسِيُّ، وَعَلَى الرَّجَّالَةِ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ الثَّقَفِيُّ، وَعَلَى النَّاسِ سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، فَقَالَ قَيْسٌ: قَدْ شَهِدْتُ يَوْمَ الْيَرْمُوكِ، وَيَوْمَ أَجْنَادِينَ، وَيَوْمَ عَبْسٍ، وَيَوْمَ فَحْلٍ، فَلَمْ أَرَ كَالْيَوْمِ عَدِيدًا، وَلَا حَدِيدًا، وَلَا صَنْعَةً لِقِتَالٍ، وَاللهِ مَا يُرَى طَرَفَاهُمْ، فَقَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ بْنُ شُعْبَةَ: إِنَّ هَذَا زَبَدٌ مِنْ زَبَدِ الشَّيْطَانِ، وَإِنَّا لَوْ قَدْ حَمَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ قَدْ جَعَلَ اللهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ، فَلَا أُلْفِيَنَّكَ إِذَا حَمَلْتُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِرَجَّالَتِي أَنْ تَحْمِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِخَيْلِكَ فِي أَقْفِيَتِهِمْ، وَلَكِنْ تَكُفَّ عَنَّا خَيْلَكَ وَاحْمِلْ عَلَى مَنْ يَلِيكَ " قَالَ: فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، إِنِّي لَأَرَى الْأَرْضَ مِنْ وَرَائِهِمْ، فَقَالَ الْمُغِيرَةُ: " اجْلِسْ فَإِنَّ الْقِيَامَ وَالْكَلَامَ عِنْدَ الْقِتَالِ فَشَلٌ، وَإِذَا أَرَادَ أَحَدُكُمْ أَنْ... فِي مَرْكَزِ رُمْحِهِ " ثُمَّ قَالَ: " إِنِّي هَازٌّ دَابَّتِي ثَلَاثًا، فَإِذَا هَزَزْتُهَا الْمَرَّةَ الْأُولَى فَتَهَيَّئُوا، ثُمَّ إِذَا هَزَزْتُهَا الثَّالِثَةَ فَتَهَيَّئُوا لِلْحَمْلَةِ " أَوْ قَالَ: " احْمِلُوا فَإِنِّي حَامِلٌ " قَالَ: فَهَزَّهَا الثَّالِثَةَ، ثُمَّ حَمَلَ وَإِنَّ عَلَيْهِ لَدِرْعَيْنِ قَالَ: فَمَا وَصَلْنَا لِنَفْسِهِ حَتَّى صَافِيَهُمْ بِطَعْنَتَيْنِ وَفَلَتَ بَيْنَهُ، وَكَانَ الْفَتْحُ قَالَ: فَجَعَلَ اللهُ بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ حَتَّى يَكُونُوا رُكَامًا، فَمَا نَشَاءُ أَنْ نَأْخُذَ رَجُلَيْنِ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمْ فَنَقْتُلَهُ إِلَّا فَعَلْتُ
Translation
✧ On the day of al-Qadisiyyah, Qays b. Makshuh al-Absi was over the cavalry, al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah al-Thaqafi over the infantry, and Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas over the people. Qays said: 'I have witnessed the day of al-Yarmuk, the day of Ajnadayn, the day of Abs, and the day of Fahl, but I have never seen anything like today in numbers, iron weapons, or readiness for battle. By Allah, their two flanks cannot be seen.' Al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah said: 'This is foam from the foam of Satan. If we charge them, Allah will throw some of them upon others. Do not let me find you, when I charge them with my infantry, charging them with your cavalry at their rear. Instead, hold back your cavalry from us and charge those near you.' He said: A man stood up and said: 'Allah is greatest! I can see the ground behind them.' Al-Mughirah said: 'Sit down. Standing and speaking at the time of battle is failure. When one of you wants to... in the socket of his spear.' Then he said: 'I will shake my mount three times. When I shake it the first time, get ready. When I shake it the third time, get ready for the charge' — or he said: 'charge, for I am charging.' He said: He shook it the third time, then charged, and he had on two coats of mail. He said: We did not reach his person until he met them with two thrusts and slipped between them, and the victory came. He said: Allah threw some of them upon others until they were in heaps, and we did not wish to take two men from them and kill them except that we did.
