عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ:
دَعَا عُمَرُ حِينَ طُعِنَ عَلِيًّا وَعُثْمَانَ وَعَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنَ عَوْفٍ وَالزُّبَيْرَ - قَالَ: وَأَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ: وَسَعْدَ بْنَ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ -، فَقَالَ: " إِنِّي نَظَرْتُ فِي أَمْرِ النَّاسِ فَلَمْ أَرَ عِنْدَهُمْ شِقَاقًا، فَإِنْ يَكُ شِقَاقٌ فَهُوَ فِيكُمْ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ قَوْمَكُمْ إِنَّمَا يُؤَمِّرُونَ أَحَدَكُمْ أَيُّهَا الثَّلَاثَةُ، فَإِنْ كُنْتَ عَلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ أَمْرِ النَّاسِ يَا عَلِيُّ فَاتَّقِ اللهَ، وَلَا تَحْمِلْ بَنِي هَاشِمٍ عَلَى رِقَابِ النَّاسِ " قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ: وَقَالَ غَيْرُ الزُّهْرِيِّ: لَا تَحْمِلْ بَنِي أَبِي رُكَانَةَ عَلَى رِقَابِ النَّاسِ. قَالَ مَعْمَرٌ: وَقَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ فِي حَدِيثِهِ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: وَإِنْ كُنْتَ يَا عُثْمَانُ عَلَى شَيْءٍ فَاتَّقِ اللهَ، وَلَا تَحْمِلْ بَنِي أَبِي مُعَيْطٍ عَلَى رِقَابِ النَّاسِ، وَإِنْ كُنْتَ عَلَى شَيْءٍ مِنْ أُمُورِ النَّاسِ يَا عَبْدَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَاتَّقِ اللهَ، وَلَا تَحْمِلْ أَقَارِبَكَ عَلَى رِقَابِ النَّاسِ، فَتَشَاوَرُوا، ثُمَّ أَمِّرُوا أَحَدَكُمْ قَالَ: فَقَامُوا لِيَتَشَاوَرُوا، قَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ، فَدَعَانِي عُثْمَانُ فَتَشَاوَرَنِي وَلَمْ يُدْخِلْنِي عُمَرُ فِي الشُّورَى، فَلَمَّا أَكْثَرَ أَنْ يَدْعُونِي قُلْتُ: أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ اللهَ ؟ أَتُؤَمِّرُونَ وَأَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَيٌّ بَعْدُ ؟ قَالَ: فَكَأَنَّمَا أَيْقَظْتُ عُمَرَ فَدَعَاهُمْ فَقَالَ: أَمْهِلُوا، لِيُصَلِّ بِالنَّاسِ صُهَيْبٌ، ثُمَّ تَشَاوَرُوا، ثُمَّ أَجْمِعُوا أَمْرَكُمْ فِي الثَّلَاثِ، وَاجْمَعُوا أُمَرَاءَ الْأَجْنَادِ، فَمَنْ تَأَمَّرَ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ غَيْرِ مَشُورَةٍ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ فَاقْتُلُوهُ. قَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: " وَاللهِ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنِّي كُنْتُ مَعَهُمْ، لِأَنِّي قَلَّ مَا رَأَيْتُ عُمَرَ يُحَرِّكُ شَفَتَيْهِ إِلَّا كَانَ بَعْضُ الَّذِي يَقُولُ. " قَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ: فَلَمَّا مَاتَ عُمَرُ اجْتَمَعُوا، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ: إِنْ شِئْتُمُ اخْتَرْتُ لَكُمْ مِنْكُمْ، فَوَلَّوْهُ ذَلِكَ، قَالَ الْمِسْوَرُ: فَمَا رَأَيْتُ مِثْلَ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ، وَاللهِ مَا تَرَكَ أَحَدًا مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ وَلَا ذَوِي غَيْرِهِمْ مِنْ ذَوِي الرَّأْيِ إِلَّا اسْتَشَارَهُمْ تِلْكَ اللَّيْلَةَ
Translation
✧ When Umar was stabbed, he summoned Ali, Uthman, Abd al-Rahman b. Awf, and al-Zubayr — he said: I think he also said Sa'd b. Abi Waqqas — and said: 'I have considered the people's affair and have not seen discord among them. If there is discord, it is among you. Then your people will appoint one of you, whichever of the three. If you are charged with anything of the people's affair, O Ali, fear Allah and do not burden Banu Hashim on the people's necks.' Ma'mar said: Someone other than al-Zuhri said: 'Do not burden Banu Abi Rukanah on the people's necks.' Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said in his hadith, from Salim, from Ibn Umar: 'And if you, O Uthman, are charged with anything, fear Allah and do not burden Banu Abi Mu'ayt on the people's necks. And if you are charged with anything of the people's affairs, O Abd al-Rahman, fear Allah and do not burden your relatives on the people's necks. So consult one another, then appoint one of yourselves.' He said: They rose to consult. Abd Allah b. Umar said: Uthman called me and consulted me, though Umar did not include me in the shura. When they called me repeatedly, I said: 'Will you not fear Allah? Will you appoint while the Commander of the Believers is still alive?' He said: It was as if I woke Umar, so he called them and said: 'Wait. Let Suhayb lead the people in prayer, then consult, then settle your matter among the three, and gather the commanders of the armies. Whoever of you takes command without consultation of the Muslims, kill him.' Ibn Umar said: 'By Allah, I would not love to have been with them, for I rarely saw Umar move his lips except that some of what he said came to pass.' Al-Zuhri said: When Umar died, they gathered, and Abd al-Rahman b. Awf said to them: 'If you wish, I will choose for you from among you,' and they entrusted that to him. Al-Miswar said: I have never seen anyone like Abd al-Rahman. By Allah, he did not leave anyone among the Muhajirun and the Ansar, nor any other person of sound judgment, without consulting them that night.
