Translation

✧ Umar b. al-Khattab did not allow any non-Arab to enter Madinah. So al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah wrote to Umar: 'I have a servant who is a carpenter, engraver, and blacksmith, in whom there is benefit for the people of Madinah. If you see fit to permit me to send him, I will do so.' He allowed him, and he had imposed on him two dirhams every day. He was called Abu Lu'lu'ah, and he was originally a Magian. He remained as long as Allah willed. Then he came to Umar complaining of the heaviness of his tax. Umar said to him: 'What crafts are you skilled in?' He said: 'Carpenter, engraver, blacksmith.' Umar said: 'Your tax is not much considering what crafts you are skilled in.' He went away resentful. Then he passed by Umar while he was sitting and said: 'Was I not told that you say: If I wished to make a mill that grinds by wind, I would do it?' Abu Lu'lu'ah said: 'I will make a mill that people will talk about.' He went on. Umar said: 'The slave has just threatened me.' When he resolved on what he resolved, he took a dagger and concealed it on himself, then sat in wait for Umar in a corner of the mosque. Umar used to go out at dawn and wake people for prayer. He passed by him, and he sprang at him and stabbed him three times: one below his navel, which was the one that killed him, and he stabbed twelve men of the people of the mosque, of whom six died and six survived. Then he slit his own throat with his dagger and died.
