Translation
✧ Regarding His saying: "And you disobeyed after He showed you what you love." The Prophet ﷺ said on the day of Uhud when Abu Sufyan and the disbelievers of Quraysh raided: 'I saw in a dream as if I had put on an impenetrable coat of mail. I interpreted it as Madinah, so remain in your dwellings and fight from behind it.' Madinah had been interconnected with buildings, so it was like a fortress. A man who had not been present at Badr said, 'O Messenger of God, lead us out to them and let us fight them.' 'Abdullah b. Ubayy b. Salul said, 'Good, by God, O Prophet of God, what you have seen. By God, no enemy has ever come upon us and we went out to him without some harm befalling us, and we have never remained in Madinah and fought from behind it without defeating our enemy.' Some of the Muslims spoke to him, saying, 'Yes, O Messenger of God, lead us out to them.' He called for his armor and put it on, then said, 'I do not think the slain will be many among you and among them. I saw in a dream slaughtered cattle.' And I say, 'Cattle, and God is with good.' A man said, 'O Messenger of God, may my father and mother be your ransom, stay with us.' He said, 'It is not fitting for a prophet, once he has put on his armor, to take it off until he meets the people. Is there a man who can guide us on a close road to the people?' The guides went ahead of him until when he was at al-Shawt from the cemetery, 'Abdullah b. Ubayy withdrew with a third of the army or nearly a third. The Prophet ﷺ went on until they met them at Uhud and lined up against them. The Prophet ﷺ had instructed his companions, if they defeated them, not to enter their camp or pursue them. When they met, they were defeated, and they disobeyed the Prophet ﷺ and disputed and differed. Then God turned them away from them to test them, as God said. The polytheists advanced, with Khalid b. al-Walid b. al-Mughirah commanding their cavalry, and they killed seventy men of the Muslims. They suffered severe wounds, and the Prophet's ﷺ incisor was broken and his face was bloodied, until Satan cried out at the top of his voice, 'Muhammad has been killed.' Ka'b b. Malik said: I was the first to recognize the Prophet ﷺ; I recognized his eyes from behind the helmet. I called out at the top of my voice, 'This is the Messenger of God ﷺ.' He gestured to me to be silent. God held back the polytheists while the Prophet ﷺ and his companions were standing. Abu Sufyan called out after some of the companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ had been mutilated and their noses and ears cut off, and some had their bellies slit. Abu Sufyan said, 'You will find some mutilation among your dead, but that was not by the choice of our leaders or our chiefs.' Then Abu Sufyan said, 'Exalted be Hubal.' 'Umar b. al-Khattab said, 'God is higher and more majestic.' He said, 'You have done well. Slain for slain at Badr.' 'Umar said, 'The slain are not equal. Our slain are in Paradise, and your slain are in the Fire.' Abu Sufyan said, 'Then we have lost.' Then they turned back. The Prophet ﷺ called upon his companions to pursue them until they reached near Hamra' al-Asad. Among those who pursued them that day was 'Abdullah b. Mas'ud. That was when God said: "Those to whom people said, 'Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them.' But it increased them in faith, and they said, 'Sufficient for us is God, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.'"
