Translation

✧ Ibn Abi Mu'ayt and Ubayy b. Khalaf al-Jumahi met. 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt said to Ubayy b. Khalaf—and they had been close friends in the pre-Islamic era—and Ubayy b. Khalaf had gone to the Prophet ﷺ, who had presented Islam to him. When 'Uqbah heard that, he said, 'I will not be pleased with you until you go to Muhammad and spit in his face, revile him, and call him a liar.' He said: But God did not give him power over that. On the day of Badr, 'Uqbah b. Abi Mu'ayt was captured among the prisoners. The Prophet ﷺ ordered 'Ali b. Abi Talib to kill him. 'Uqbah said, 'O Muhammad, among all these, am I to be killed?' He said, 'Yes.' He said, 'Why?' He said, 'Because of your disbelief, your wickedness, and your insolence toward God and His Messenger.' Ma'mar said: Miqsam said: It has reached us, and God knows best, that he said, 'Who will care for the children?' He said, 'The Fire.' He said: 'Ali b. Abi Talib stood over him and struck his neck. As for Ubayy b. Khalaf, he said, 'By God, I will kill Muhammad.' That reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said, 'Rather, I will kill him, God willing.' He said: A man among those who heard that from the Prophet ﷺ went to Ubayy b. Khalaf and said, 'When it was said to Muhammad ﷺ what you said, he said, "Rather, I will kill him, God willing."' That alarmed him, and he said, 'I adjure you by God, did you hear him say that?' He said, 'Yes.' It settled in his heart, for they never heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say a statement except that it was true. On the day of Uhud, Ubayy b. Khalaf went out with the polytheists and began seeking an opportunity to catch the Prophet ﷺ off guard to charge at him, but a man from the Muslims would come between him and the Prophet ﷺ. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw that, he said to his companions, 'Let him be.' He took a spear and thrust it at him—he said: he threw it at him—and it struck him in his collarbone beneath the mail of his helmet and above the armor. No great amount of blood flowed from him; the blood remained within his belly, and he began to bellow as a bull bellows. His companions came and carried him off while he bellowed, and they said, 'What is this? By God, you have only a scratch.' He said, 'By God, if he had only spat on me, it would have killed me. Did he not say, "I will kill him, God willing"? By God, if what is in me were among the people of Dhu al-Majaz, it would kill them.' He said: He remained only a day or so until he died to the Fire. Then God revealed concerning him: "And the Day the wrongdoer will bite his hands" up to His saying "And Satan is ever to man a deserter."
