Translation

✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ sent a company as his reconnaissance, and he appointed 'Asim b. Thabit over them, who is the grandfather of 'Asim b. 'Umar. They set out until they were on part of the road between 'Usfan and Makkah, encamped. They were mentioned to a clan of Hudhayl called Banu Lihyan, who pursued them with nearly a hundred archers until they saw their tracks, until they stopped at a place where they could see them. They found date stones in it, which they saw were from the dates of Madinah. They said, 'This is from the dates of Yathrib.' They followed their tracks until they caught up with them. When 'Asim b. Thabit and his companions sensed them, they took refuge on a hill. The people came and surrounded them and said, 'You have our covenant and pact: if you come down to us, we will not kill any man among you.' 'Asim b. Thabit said, 'As for me, I will not descend under the protection of a disbeliever. O God, inform Your Messenger about us.' He said: They fought them until they killed 'Asim along with seven men. Khubayb b. 'Adi, Zayd b. Dathinah, and another man remained. They gave them the covenant and pact if they came down to them, so they came down to them. When they had them in their power, they untied the strings of their bows and bound them with them. The third man who was with them said, 'This is the first act of treachery.' He refused to accompany them, so they dragged him, but he refused to follow them and said, 'I have an example in these.' They struck his neck. They went off with Khubayb b. 'Adi and Zayd b. Dathinah until they sold them in Makkah. Banu al-Harith b. 'Amir b. Nawfal purchased Khubayb, for he had killed al-Harith on the day of Badr. He remained with them as a captive, and when they resolved to kill him, he borrowed a razor from one of the daughters of al-Harith to shave with. She lent it to him. She said: I was heedless of a young son of mine, and he crept to him until he came to him. She said: He took him and placed him on his thigh. When I saw him, I was terrified, and he recognized my fear while the razor was in his hand. He said, 'Do you fear that I will kill him? I would not do that, God willing.' She said: She used to say, 'I have never seen a captive better than Khubayb. I saw him eating from a bunch of grapes, and there was no fruit in Makkah that day, and he was bound in iron. It was nothing but provision that God provided for him.' Then they brought him out of the sanctuary to kill him. He said, 'Let me pray two rak'ahs.' He prayed two rak'ahs, then said, 'Were it not that you would think that what is in me is fear of death, I would add more.' He was the first to institute two rak'ahs at execution. Then he said, 'O God, count them by number.' Then he said: 'I care not on which side for God my fall may be, and that is in the essence of God, and if He wills He blesses the joints of a severed body.' Then 'Uqbah b. al-Harith stood over him and killed him. He said: Quraysh sent to 'Asim to bring something of his body by which to recognize him, for he had killed a great one of their great ones. God sent something like a cloud of hornets, and it protected him from their messengers, so they could not get anything of him.
