Translation

✧ The first thing that began the revelation to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was truthful dreams; he would not see a dream except that it came like the break of dawn. Then solitude was made beloved to him, and he would go to Hira and practice tahannuth there—that is, worship for a number of nights—and he would take provisions for that. Then he would return to Khadijah and take provisions for that again, then he would return to Khadijah and take provisions for the like of it. When the truth came to him while he was in the cave of Hira, the angel came to him and said: “Read.” He said to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: “Read.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I said: “I am not a reader.” He took me and pressed me until it exhausted me, then he released me and said: “Read.” I said: “I am not a reader.” He took me and pressed me a second time until it exhausted me, then he released me and said: “Read.” I said: “I am not a reader.” He took me and pressed me a third time until it exhausted me, then he released me and said: “Read in the name of your Lord who created” until he reached “what he did not know.” He returned with his heart trembling, until he entered upon Khadijah and said: “Wrap me up, wrap me up.” They wrapped him until the terror left him. He said to Khadijah: “What is wrong with me?” and he told her the news. He said: “I feared for myself.” She said: “No, by Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You maintain kinship ties, speak the truth, honor the guest, and help in times of hardship.” Then Khadijah took him and brought him to Waraqah b. Nawfal b. Rashid b. Abd al-Uzza b. Qusayy, who was the cousin of Khadijah, the brother of her father. He had become a Christian in the pre-Islamic era, and he wrote the Arabic script, and he wrote in Arabic from the Gospel as much as Allah willed. He was an old man who had gone blind. Khadijah said: “O cousin, listen to your nephew.” Waraqah said: “Nephew, what do you see?” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told him what he had seen. Waraqah said: “This is the Namus who was sent down to Moses ﷺ. Would that I were young when your people drive you out.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Will they drive me out?” Waraqah said: “Yes, no one has come with what you have come with except that he was opposed and harmed. If I live to see your day, I will support you with strong support.” Then Waraqah died soon after. The revelation paused for a period, until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieved, as we have heard, so much that he would go out several times wanting to throw himself from the tops of high mountains. When he climbed to the top of a mountain, Gabriel ﷺ appeared to him and said: “O Muhammad, you are truly the Messenger of Allah.” Then his heart would calm and his soul would be at ease, and he would return. If the pause of revelation became long for him, he would go back to something like that, and when he climbed to the top of a mountain, Gabriel ﷺ appeared to him and said the same thing.
