قَالَ: ثُمَّ أَقْرَعَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ مِائَةٍ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَصَارَتِ الْقُرْعَةُ عَلَى مِائَةٍ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ فَنَحَرَهَا عَبْدُ الْمُطَّلِبِ مَكَانَ عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللهِ أَحْسَنَ رَجُلٍ رُئِيَ فِي قُرَيْشٍ قَطُّ، فَخَرَجَ يَوْمًا عَلَى نِسَاءٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ مُجْتَمِعَاتٍ، فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْهُنَّ: يَا نِسَاءَ قُرَيْشٍ أَيَّتُكُنَّ يَتَزَوَّجُهَا هَذَا الْفَتَى فَنَصَطَتِ النُّورَ الَّذِي بَيْنَ عَيْنَيْهِ، - ✧ The first thing mentioned about Abd al-Muttalib, the grandfather of the Messenger ﷺ, is that Quraysh went out of the sanctuary fleeing from the Companions of the Elephant, while he was a young boy. He said: “By Allah, I will not go out of the sanctuary of Allah seeking glory elsewhere.” So he sat by the House, and Quraysh left him. He said: “O Allah, indeed a man defends his saddle, so defend Your saddle; let not their cross and their plot tomorrow overcome Your plot.” He remained steadfast until Allah, Blessed and Exalted, destroyed the elephant and its companions. Quraysh returned, and he had become great among them for his patience and his reverence of Allah's sacred things. While he was in that state, his eldest son was born to him and grew up, and he was al-Harith b. Abd al-Muttalib. Abd al-Muttalib was visited in a dream and was told: “Dig Zamzam, the hidden treasure of the great elder.” He said: He woke up and said: “O Allah, make it clear to me.” Then he was shown in a dream another time: “Dig Zamzam, conceal it between the refuse and blood, in the scratching place of the crow, in the village of ants, facing the red stones.” He said: Abd al-Muttalib got up and walked until he sat in the Sacred Mosque, looking at what was hidden for him of signs. A cow was slaughtered at al-Hazurah, and it escaped from its slaughterer with the last of its life, until death overcame it in the mosque at the place of Zamzam. That cow was slaughtered in its place, until its meat was carried away. A crow came down and landed on the refuse, and it scratched in the village of ants. Abd al-Muttalib got up and began digging there. Quraysh came to him and said to Abd al-Muttalib: “What is this deed? We would not have accused you of ignorance. Why are you digging in our mosque?” Abd al-Muttalib said: “I am indeed digging this well, and I will fight anyone who prevents me from it.” He and his son al-Harith began digging, and he had no son other than him that day. Some people from Quraysh attacked them, quarreled with them, and fought them. The people of Quraysh forbade it because they knew of the nobility of his lineage, his truthfulness, and his striving in his religion at that time. When the digging became possible and the harm intensified, he vowed that if he was granted ten sons, he would sacrifice one of them. Then he dug until he reached swords that had been buried in Zamzam. When Quraysh saw that he had reached the swords, they said to Abd al-Muttalib: “Give us a share of what you have found.” Abd al-Muttalib said: “Rather, these swords are for the House of Allah.” Then he dug until he struck water, and he dug it in the bottom, then he widened it so it would not be exhausted. Then he built a basin over it, and he and his son began drawing water and filling that basin, and the pilgrims would drink from it. Some people from the envious of Quraysh would break it at night, and Abd al-Muttalib would repair it in the morning. When they increased in corrupting it, Abd al-Muttalib called upon his Lord, and he was shown in a dream, and it was said to him: “Say: O Allah, I do not make it lawful for one who washes, but it is lawful and wholesome for one who drinks. Then You suffice me against them.” Abd al-Muttalib got up when Quraysh gathered in the mosque, and he proclaimed what he had been shown, then he left. No one from Quraysh would corrupt his basin except that he was struck with a disease in his body, until they left his basin and his watering place for him. Then Abd al-Muttalib married women, and ten sons were born to him. He said: “O Allah, I had vowed to You to sacrifice one of them, and I will draw lots among them, so let the lot fall on whomever You will.” He drew lots among them, and the lot fell on Abdullah b. Abd al-Muttalib, who was the dearest of his children to him. He said: “O Allah, is he dearer to You or one hundred camels?” He said: Then he drew lots between him and one hundred camels, and the lot fell on the one hundred camels. Abd al-Muttalib sacrificed them in place of Abdullah. Abdullah was the most handsome man ever seen among Quraysh. One day he went out to some women of Quraysh gathered together, and a woman among them said: “O women of Quraysh, which of you will this young man marry, so that the light between his eyes may shine upon her?” He said: There was a light between his eyes. Aminah bt. Wahb b. Abd Manaf b. Zuhrah married him, and he consummated the marriage with her, and she conceived the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then Abd al-Muttalib sent Abdullah b. Abd al-Muttalib to buy dates for him from Yathrib, and Abdullah died there. Aminah gave birth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was in the care of Abd al-Muttalib. He sought a wet nurse for him from Banu Sa'd b. Bakr. The woman who nursed him took him to the market of Ukaz, and a soothsayer among the soothsayers saw him and said: “O people of Ukaz, kill this boy, for he will have a kingdom.” His wet nurse was alarmed by him, but Allah saved him. Then he grew up with her, until when he was walking and his foster sister carried him, his sister from his wet nurse came to him and said: “O mother, I saw some men take my brother just now and split open his belly.” His wet nurse got up in alarm and came to him, and he was sitting with his color changed, and she saw no one with him. She traveled with him and brought him to his mother, and she said to her: “Take back your son, for I have feared for him.” His mother said: “No, by Allah, there is nothing wrong with my son that you fear. I saw while he was in my womb that a light came out of me that illuminated the palaces of Syria. And when I gave birth to him, he fell propping himself on his hands, raising his head to the sky.” His mother and his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib took him. Then his mother died, and he was left in the care of his grandfather. While he was a boy, he would come to his grandfather's cushion and sit on it. His grandfather would go out when he was old, and the slave girl who led him would say: “Get down from your grandfather's cushion.” Abd al-Muttalib would say: “Leave my son, for he is good and blessed.” Then his grandfather died while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a boy, and Abu Talib, who was the full brother of Abdullah, took care of him. When he approached puberty, Abu Talib traveled with him as a merchant to Syria. When they stopped at Tayma', a rabbi from the Jews of Tayma' saw him and said to Abu Talib: “What is this boy to you?” He said: “He is my nephew.” He said to him: “Are you compassionate toward him?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “By Allah, if you bring him to Syria, you will never reach your family with him; they will kill him. This is their enemy.” Abu Talib returned from Tayma' to Makkah. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached puberty, a woman was perfuming the Kaaba, and a spark flew from her censer into the cloth of the Kaaba and burned it, and it became weak. Quraysh consulted about demolishing it, and they were afraid to demolish it. Al-Walid b. al-Mughirah said to them: “What do you want by demolishing it? Do you want improvement or harm?” They said: “Rather improvement.” He said: “Allah does not destroy the one who improves.” They said: “Who will climb it and demolish it?” Al-Walid said: “I will climb it and demolish it.” Al-Walid b. al-Mughirah climbed onto the top of the House with an axe and said: “O Allah, we intend only improvement,” then he demolished. When Quraysh saw that he had demolished part of it and no punishment they feared came to them, they demolished with him, until when they rebuilt it and reached the place of the Corner, Quraysh disputed about the Corner, which tribe should raise it, until it almost came to blows among them. They said: “Come, let us appoint as arbitrator the first person who comes to us from this road.” They agreed on that. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to them, and he was a boy wearing a striped cloak. They made him arbitrator. He ordered the Corner to be placed in a cloth, then he ordered the chief of each tribe and gave him a side of the cloth, then he climbed and they raised the Corner to him, and he placed it. Then he continued to increase in their esteem as the years passed, until they called him al-Amin before revelation came to him. Then they would not slaughter a camel for a sale except that they brought him and he prayed for them in it. When he reached full strength and maturity, and he did not have much wealth, Khadijah bt. Khuwaylid hired him to go to the market of Hubashah, which is a market in Tihamah, and she hired another man from Quraysh with him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, while speaking about her: “I have not seen from the employer of a hired man better than Khadijah. We would not return, I and my companion, except that we found with her a gift of food that she had saved for us.” He said: When we returned from the market of Hubashah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: I said to my companion: “Come with us to talk with Khadijah.” He said: We came to her, and while we were with her, a young woman from the maidens of Quraysh entered upon us, a young woman who had reached maturity and desired a man. She said: “Is this Muhammad? By the One by whom oaths are sworn, if he has come, it is as a suitor.” I said: “Not at all.” When we went out, I and my companion, he said: “Are you ashamed of the proposal of Khadijah? By Allah, there is no woman of Quraysh who does not see you as a suitable match for her.” He said: I returned to her another time, and that young woman entered upon us and said: “Is this Muhammad? By the One by whom oaths are sworn, if he has come, it is as a suitor.” He said: I said, out of shyness: “Yes.” He said: Khadijah and her sister did not disobey us. She went to her father Khuwaylid b. Asad, and he was drunk from wine. She said: “This is your nephew Muhammad b. Abdullah, proposing to Khadijah, and Khadijah has accepted.” He called him and asked him about that, and he proposed to him, and he married him to her. He said: Khadijah perfumed him and put on him a fine garment, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ consummated the marriage with her. In the morning, the old man sobered up from his drunkenness and said: “What is this perfume? And what is this garment?” Khadijah's sister said: “This is a garment that your nephew Muhammad b. Abdullah gave you; you married him to Khadijah, and he has consummated the marriage with her.” The old man denied it, then he came to accept it, and he was ashamed. Some poets of Quraysh began to say: “Do not disdain, Khadijah, Muhammad; he is strong, shining like the radiance of the star.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained with Khadijah until she bore him some of his daughters, and she had a son by him, al-Qasim. Some scholars claimed that she bore him another boy called al-Tahir. He said: Others said: We do not know that she bore him except al-Qasim, and she bore him his four daughters: Zaynab, Fatimah, Ruqayyah, and Umm Kulthum. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to practice tahannuth after she bore him some of his daughters, and solitude was made beloved to him.
