✧ Guard duty at the frontier

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنْ مُوسَى بْنِ أَبِي عَلْقَمَةَ، عَنْ عِيسَى قَالَ: قَالَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ:
عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْجِهَادِ، مَا دَامَ حُلْوًا خَضِرًا قَبْلَ أَنْ يَكُونَ ثُمَامًا، أَوْ يَكُونَ رُمَامًا، أَوْ يَكُونَ حُطَامًا، فَإِذَا انْتَطَاتِ الْمَغَازِي وَأُكِلَتِ الْغَنَائِمُ وَاسْتُحِلَّتِ الْحُرَمُ، فَعَلَيْكُمْ بِالرِّبَاطِ فَإِنَّهُ أَفْضَلُ غَزْوِكُمْ
Translation
✧ Keep to jihad as long as it is sweet and green, before it becomes stubble, or becomes decayed, or becomes broken pieces. When expeditions become distant, spoils are consumed, and sacred things are violated, then keep to guard duty, for it is the best of your fighting.
