عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنِ ابْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ
أَنَّ كَعْبَ بْنَ الْأَشْرَفِ كَانَ يَهْجُو النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَيُؤْذِيهِ، " فَأَمَرَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ سَعْدَ بْنَ مُعَاذٍ أَنْ يَبْعَثَ إِلَيْهِ خَمْسَةَ نَفَرٍ، فَجَاءُوا بِهِ وَهُوَ فِي مَجْلِسِ قَوْمِهِ بِالْعَوَالِي، فَلَمَّا رَآهُمْ ذُعِرَ مِنْهُمْ، فَقَالَ: مَا جَاءَ بِكُمْ ؟ قَالُوا: جِئْنَاكَ لِحَاجَةٍ قَالَ: فَيَدْنُو بَعْضُكُمْ فَيُحَدِّثُنِي بِحَاجَتِهِ، قَالَ: فَدَنَا مِنْهُ بَعْضُهُمْ، فَقَالُوا: جِئْنَاكَ نُبَايِعُكَ أَدْرَاعًا عِنْدَنَا، فَقَالَ: وَاللهِ لَئِنْ فَعَلْتُمْ، لَقَدْ جُهِدْتُمْ مُنْذُ نَزَلَ هَذَا الرَّجُلُ بَيْنَ أَظْهُرِكُمْ - أَوْ قَالَ بِكُمْ - قَالَ: فَوَاعَدُوهُ أَنْ يَأْتُوهُ بَعْدَ هُدُوءٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ قَالَ: فَجَاءُوهُ فَقَامَ إِلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَتِ امْرَأَتُهُ: مَا جَاءَكَ هَؤُلَاءِ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ بِشَيْءٍ مِمَّا تُحِبُّ قَالَ: إِنَّهُمْ قَدْ حَدَّثُونِي بِحَاجَتِهِمْ، فَلَمَّا دَنَا مِنْهُمُ اعْتَنَقَهُ أَبُو عَبْسٍ، وَعَلَاهُ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ بِالسَّيْفِ، فَطَعَنَهُ فِي خَاصِرَتِهِ بِخِنْجَرِهِ فَقَتَلُوهُ، فَلَمَّا أَصْبَحَتْ يَهُودُ غَدَوْا إِلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ فَقَالُوا: قُتِلَ صَاحِبُنَا غِيلَةً فَذَكَّرَهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَا كَانَ يَهْجُوهُ فِي أَشْعَارِهِ وَيُؤْذِيهِ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ دَعَاهُمُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ إِلَى أَنْ يَكْتُبَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُمْ " - قَالَ: حَسِبْتُهُ قَالَ: فَذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ مَعَ عَلِيٍّ، وَقَالَ الزُّهْرِيُّ أَوْ غَيْرُهُ - فَقَالَ قَائِلٌ مِمَّنْ كَانَ يَدَّعِي الْإِسْلَامَ لِأَبِي عَبْسٍ: قَتَلْتُمْ كَعْبًا غِيلَةً قَالَ: فَحَلَفَ أَبُو عَبْسٍ: لَا يَرَاهُ أَبَدًا يَقْدِرُ عَلَى قَتْلِهِ إِلَّا قَتَلَهُ، قَالَ: فَكَانَ إِذَا رَآهُ عَدَا فِي أَثَرِهِ حَتَّى يُعْجِزَهُ الْآخَرُ
Translation
✧ Ka'b b. al-Ashraf used to satirize the Prophet ﷺ and harm him. So the Prophet ﷺ ordered Sa'd b. Mu'adh to send five men to him. They brought him while he was in the assembly of his people at al-'Awali. When he saw them, he was startled by them and said, 'What has brought you?' They said, 'We have come to you for a need.' He said, 'Let one of you come close and tell me his need.' One of them came close to him, and they said, 'We have come to pledge allegiance to you for armor we have.' He said, 'By Allah, if you do, you have been hard-pressed since this man settled among you'—or he said, 'with you.' They made an appointment with him to come after the night had grown still. They came to him, and he rose to meet them. His wife said, 'What brings these people at this hour with anything you would like?' He said, 'They have told me of their need.' When he drew near to them, Abu 'Abs embraced him, and Muhammad b. Maslama came upon him with the sword and stabbed him in his side with his dagger, and they killed him. When morning came, the Jews went to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Our companion has been killed by treachery.' The Prophet ﷺ reminded them of how he had been satirizing him in his poetry and harming him. He said, 'Then the Prophet ﷺ invited them to write a pact between him and them.'—He said, 'I think he said: And that document is with 'Ali.' Al-Zuhri or someone else said: A man among those who claimed Islam said to Abu 'Abs, 'You killed Ka'b by treachery.' Abu 'Abs swore that he would never see him able to kill him but that he would kill him. So whenever he saw him, he would run after him until the other man eluded him.
