Translation

✧ When the Messenger of God ﷺ reached puberty, a woman perfumed the Ka'bah with incense, and a spark flew from her incense burner into the Ka'bah's cloth coverings, and it burned. Quraysh consulted about demolishing it, but they feared to demolish it. Al-Walid b. al-Mughira said to them: 'What do you intend by demolishing it? Do you intend repair or harm?' They said: 'We intend repair.' He said: 'God will not destroy the one who repairs.' They said: 'Who will climb it and demolish it?' Al-Walid b. al-Mughira said: 'I will climb it and demolish it.' So al-Walid b. al-Mughira climbed onto the top of the House with an axe, then said: 'O God, we intend nothing but repair,' then he demolished. When Quraysh saw that he had demolished part of it and no harm came to them, they demolished with him. When they built and reached the place of the Corner, Quraysh disputed over the Corner—which tribe would have the honor of lifting it—until they almost came to blows. They said: 'Come, let us appoint as arbiter the first man who comes out to us from this alley.' They agreed on that. The Messenger of God ﷺ came out to them, a young lad wearing a striped waistcloth. They made him arbiter. He ordered that the Corner be placed on a cloth, then he ordered the chief of each tribe and gave him a side of the cloth to hold. Then he himself climbed up, and they lifted the Corner to him, and he placed it.
