✧ Wiping over the leather socks

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، أَنَّ الْمُغِيرَةَ بْنَ شُعْبَةَ قَالَ:
كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي سَفَرٍ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي بَعْضِ الطَّرِيقِ تَخَلَّفَ وَتَخَلَّفْتُ مَعَهُ بِالْإِدَاوَةِ فَتَبَرَّزَ، ثُمَّ أَتَانِي فَسَكَبْتُ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ، وَذَلِكَ عِنْدَ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ، فَلَمَّا غَسَلَ وَجْهَهُ وَأَرَادَ غَسْلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ، ضَاقَ كُمُّ جُبَّتِهِ وَعَلَيْهِ جُبَّةٌ شَامِيَّةٌ، قَالَ: فَأَخْرَجَ يَدَيْهِ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْجُبَّةِ، فَغَسَلَ ذِرَاعَيْهِ، ثُمَّ تَوَضَّأَ عَلَى خُفَّيْهِ، قَالَ: ثُمَّ انْتَهَيْنَا إِلَى الْقَوْمِ وَقَدْ صَلَّى بِهِمْ عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَوْفٍ رَكْعَةً فَذَهَبْتُ أُؤْذِنُهُ، فَقَالَ: دَعْهُ ثُمَّ انْصَرَفَ، فَقَامَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ، فَصَلَّى رَكْعَةً فَفَزِعَ النَّاسُ لِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ: أَصَبْتُمْ، أَوْ قَالَ: أَحْسَنْتُمْ
Translation
✧ I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a journey. When he was partway, he fell behind and I fell behind with him carrying the water vessel. He relieved himself, then came to me and I poured water over his hands. That was at the time of the dawn prayer. When he washed his face and wanted to wash his forearms, the sleeve of his jubbah was tight, and he was wearing a Syrian jubbah. He said: So he brought his hands out from under the jubbah, washed his forearms, then performed ablution wiping over his leather socks. He said: Then we reached the people, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf had already led them in one rakʿah. I went to inform him, but he said: Leave him. Then he finished. The Prophet ﷺ stood and prayed one rakʿah. The people were alarmed at that, and he said: You did right, or he said: You did well.
