✧ How many witnesses are sufficient for sighting the crescent?

أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ:
قُلْتُ لِعَطَاءٍ: أَرَأَيْتَ لَوْ أَنَّ رَجُلًا رَأَى هِلَالَ رَمَضَانَ قَبْلَ النَّاسِ بِلَيْلَةٍ أَيَصُومُ قَبْلَهُمْ، وَيُفْطِرُ قَبْلَهُمْ ؟ قَالَ: لَا، إِلَّا إِنْ رَآهُ النَّاسُ أَخْشَى أَنْ يَكُونَ شُبِّهَ عَلَيْهِ حَتَّى يَكُونَا اثْنَيْنِ، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: لَا، إِلَّا رَآهُ وَسَايَرَهُ سَاعَةً قَالَ: " وَلَوْ ! حَتَّى يَكُونَا اثْنَيْنِ
Translation
✧ I said to Ata, "What do you think if a man saw the crescent of Ramadan one night before the people—should he fast before them and break his fast before them?" He said, "No, unless the people have also seen it. I fear that he may have been mistaken, unless there are two." I said, "No, unless he saw it and watched it for a while?" He said, "Even so, until there are two."
