عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنْ مَعْمَرٍ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ، عَنْ أَبِي قِلَابَةَ،
أَنَّ رَجُلَيْنِ رَأَيَا الْهِلَالَ، وَهُمَا فِي سَفَرٍ فَتَعَجَّلَا حَتَّى قَدِمَا الْمَدِينَةَ ضُحًى فَأَخْبَرَا عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ بِذَلِكَ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ لِأَحَدِهِمَا: " أَصَائِمٌ أَنْتَ ؟ "، قَالَ: نَعَمْ، قَالَ: " لِمَ ؟ " قَالَ: لِأَنِّي كَرِهْتُ أَنْ يَكُونَ النَّاسُ صُيَّامًا، وَأَنَا مُفْطِرٌ، فَكَرِهْتُ الْخِلَافَ عَلَيْهِمْ، فَقَالَ لِلْآخَرِ: " فَأَنْتَ ؟ " قَالَ: أَصْبَحْتُ مُفْطِرًا قَالَ: " لِمَ ؟ " قَالَ: لِأَنِّي رَأَيْتُ الْهِلَالَ فَكَرِهْتُ أَنْ أَصُومَ، فَقَالَ لِلَّذِي أَفْطَرَ: لَوْلَا هَذَا - يَعْنِي الَّذِي صَامَ - لَرَدَدْنَا شَهَادَتَكَ وَلَأَوْجَعْنَا رَأْسَكَ، ثُمَّ أَمَرَ النَّاسَ فَأَفْطَرُوا وَخَرَجَ
Translation
✧ Two men saw the crescent while they were traveling, and they hurried until they reached Madinah in the forenoon and informed Umar b. al-Khattab of that. Umar said to one of them, "Are you fasting?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Why?" He said, "Because I disliked that the people be fasting while I am not fasting, and I disliked differing from them." Then he said to the other, "And you?" He said, "I began the day not fasting." He said, "Why?" He said, "Because I saw the crescent, and I disliked to fast." He said to the one who had broken his fast, "Were it not for this one—meaning the one who fasted—we would have rejected your testimony and given you a beating on your head." Then he ordered the people, and they broke their fast and went out.
