Translation
✧ What about the verse: "And give its due on the day of its harvest" - is that for everything, and do not be excessive in what you give of the due on the day of its harvest, or in everything? He said: "Yes, in everything; excessiveness is prohibited, and in everything there is successive giving. As for His saying: 'And give its due on the day of its harvest,' that is from date palms, grapevines, and all grains." I said: What do you think of fruits? He said: "For them too they give." Then he said: "From everything that is harvested they give its due on the day of its harvest - from date palms, grapevines, grains, fruits, vegetables, or sugar cane, or from anything of that." He said: "That is successive giving." I said: Is that obligatory on people? He said: Yes. Then he recited: "And give its due on the day of its harvest." Then I said: Is there any specified, known amount? He said: "No." I said: If I give charity from what I pay, whether little or much, will it suffice for me? He said: "Yes, that is enough for you." I said: If no poor people are present to me, should I store it for them? He said: "Yes, or send to your neighbors." He said: Will it suffice for me if I give to my neighbor? He said: "Yes, if he is in need." He said: I said: I had various grains - millet, hulless barley, dates, barley, and various other grains - so I gathered all that together as produce. Should I feed from every kind of grain, or is it enough for me to feed from one of them? He said: "Rather, feed from every kind of grain." He said: "That is successive giving." I said to him: What is millet? He said: "A grain that is in al-Ta'if, and hulless barley is like barley but has no husk, and it is the stalk."
