عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ قَالَ: "
بَعَثَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مُعَاذًا عَلَى الْيَمَنِ فَقُبِضَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فَجْأَةً وَاسْتُخْلِفَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ قَالَ: وَبَعَثَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ عُمَرَ عَلَى الْمَوْسِمِ فَجَاءَ مُعَاذٌ يَوْمَ عَرَفَةَ، وَمَعَهُ وُصَفَاءُ قَدْ عَزَلَهُمْ فَلَقِيَهُمْ عُمَرُ فَقَالَ: مَا هَؤُلَاءِ ؟ فَقَالَ: هَؤُلَاءِ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ مِنَ الْجِزْيَةِ، وَهَؤُلَاءِ أُهْدُوا لِي هَدِيَّةً، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ: أَطِعْنِي وَسَلِّمْهُمْ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ، فَإِنْ سَلَّمَهُمْ لَكَ أَخَذْتَهُمْ، فَقَالَ مُعَاذٌ: لَا وَاللهِ لَا أَفْعَلُ، لَا أَعْمِدُ إِلَى هَدِيَّةٍ أُهْدِيَتْ لِي فَأُعْطِيهَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ الْغَدُ لَقِيَ مُعَاذٌ عُمَرَ فَقَالَ: مَا أُرَانِي إِلَّا فَاعِلًا الَّذِي قُلْتَ لِي، إِنِّي رَأَيْتُنِي الْبَارِحَةَ أَتَوْا إِلَى النَّارِ، وَأَنْتَ آخِذٌ بِحُجُزَتِي، فَأَتَى أَبَا بَكْرٍ مُعَاذٌ فَدَفَعَهُ إِلَيْهِ، فَقَالَ: هَؤُلَاءِ أُهْدُوا لِي فَخُذْهُمْ فَأَنْتَ أَحَقُّ بِهِمْ قَالَ: فَسَلَّمَهُمْ أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَأَخَذَهُمْ، فَانْطَلَقَ بِهِمْ إِلَى مَنْزِلِهِ فَأُقِيمَتِ الصَّلَاةُ، فَإِذَا هُمْ فِي الصَّفِّ خَلْفَهُ فَلَمَّا صَلَّى قَالَ: أَصَلَّيْتُمْ ؟ قَالُوا: نَعَمْ. قَالَ: لِمَنْ ؟ قَالُوا: لِلهِ، قَالَ: اذْهَبُوا فَأَنْتُمْ لِلهِ
Translation
✧ The Prophet ﷺ sent Muʿādh to Yemen. Then the Prophet ﷺ died suddenly, and Abū Bakr was appointed as successor. He said: Abū Bakr sent ʿUmar over the pilgrimage season. Muʿādh came on the Day of ʿArafa with servants whom he had set aside. ʿUmar met them and said: 'What are these?' He said: 'These are for Abū Bakr from the poll tax, and these were gifted to me as a present.' ʿUmar said: 'Obey me and hand them over to Abū Bakr. If he gives them to you, take them.' Muʿādh said: 'No, by Allah, I will not do it. I will not take a gift that was given to me and give it to Abū Bakr.' The next day, Muʿādh met ʿUmar and said: 'I think I will do what you told me. Last night I saw myself brought to the Fire while you were holding my waist-wrapper.' So Muʿādh went to Abū Bakr and handed them over to him, saying: 'These were gifted to me, so take them; you are more entitled to them.' He said: Abū Bakr accepted them and took them, and went with them to his house. When the prayer was called, they were in the row behind him. After he prayed, he said: 'Did you pray?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'For whom?' They said: 'For Allah.' He said: 'Go, for you are for Allah.'
