✧ Patience, weeping, and wailing

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ قَالَ: أُخْبِرْتُ خَبَرًا رُفِعَ إِلَى أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ بْنِ الْجَرَّاحِ صَاحِبِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ،
أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ أَتَى عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ ثَابِتٍ أَبَا الرَّبِيعِ يَعُودُهُ فِي مَرَضِهِ مَرَّتَيْنِ، فَتُوُفِّيَ حِينَ أَتَاهُ فِي الْآخِرَةِ مِنْهُمَا، فَصَرَخَ بِهِ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " قَدْ حِيلَ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ، فَإِنَّا لِلهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ " فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ ذَلِكَ بَنَاتُهُ وَبَنَاتُ أَخِيهِ قُمْنَ يَبْكِينَ، فَقَالَ لَهُنَّ جَبْرُ بْنُ عَتِيكٍ: لَا تُؤْذِينَ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " دَعْهُنَّ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ فَلْيَبْكِينَ أَبَا الرَّبِيعِ مَا دَامَ بَيْنَهُنَّ، فَإِذَا وَجَبَ فَلَا يَبْكِينَهُ "، قَالَتِ ابْنَتُهُ: لَقَدْ كُنْتَ قَدْ قَضَيْتَ جِهَازَكَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ: " قَدْ وَقَعَ أَجْرُ أَبِي الرَّبِيعِ عَلَى نِيَّتِهِ، مَاذَا تَعُدُّونَ الشَّهَادَةَ ؟ " قَالُوا: الْقَتْلُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ، فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ شُهَدَاءَ أُمَّتِي إِذًا لَقَلِيلٌ " فَقَالُوا: فَمَا الشُّهَدَاءُ يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: الْمَطْعُونُ شَهِيدٌ، وَالْمَبْطُونُ شَهِيدٌ، وَصَاحِبُ الْحَرِيقِ شَهِيدٌ، وَصَاحِبُ الْغَرَقِ شَهِيدٌ، وَصَاحِبُ ذَاتِ الْجَنْبِ شَهِيدٌ، وَصَاحِبُ الْغَمِّ شَهِيدٌ، وَالْمَرَأَةُ تَمُوتُ بِجَمْعٍ شَهِيدٌ " وَكَفَّنَهُ النَّبِيُّ ﷺ فِي قَمِيصِهِ
Translation
✧ The Prophet ﷺ came to Abd Allah b. Thabit Abu al-Rabi to visit him during his illness twice. He died when he came to him on the last of those two visits. The Prophet ﷺ cried out once or twice, then said: “A barrier has been placed between us and Abu al-Rabi. Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return.” When his daughters and the daughters of his brother heard that, they began to weep. Jabr b. Atik said to them: “Do not annoy the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Leave them, O Abu Abd Allah; let them weep for Abu al-Rabi as long as he is among them, but when it becomes obligatory, they should not weep for him.” His daughter said: “You had already prepared your equipment in the way of Allah.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “The reward of Abu al-Rabi has fallen according to his intention. What do you count as martyrdom?” They said: “Being killed in the way of Allah.” He said: “Then the martyrs of my community would be few.” They said: “What are the martyrs, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “The one who dies of plague is a martyr, the one who dies of a stomach ailment is a martyr, the one who dies by fire is a martyr, the one who drowns is a martyr, the one who dies of pleurisy is a martyr, the one who dies of grief is a martyr, and the woman who dies in childbirth is a martyr.” The Prophet ﷺ shrouded him in his shirt.
