Translation
✧ Ḥumayd al-Ḥimyarī asked Ibn ʿAbbās: "I travel; should I shorten the prayer during travel or complete it?" Ibn ʿAbbās said: "It is not a shortening, but its completion and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out secure, fearing none but Allah, and prayed two rakʿahs until he returned. Then Abū Bakr went out, fearing none but Allah, and prayed two rakʿahs until he returned. Then ʿUmar went out secure, fearing none but Allah, and prayed two rakʿahs until he returned. Then ʿUthmān did that for two-thirds of his rule or half of it; then he prayed it as four, and then the Umayyads adopted it." Ibn Jurayj said: It reached me that he completed it as four at Minā only because a bedouin called out to him in the mosque of al-Khayf at Minā: "O Commander of the Faithful, I have continued praying them as two rakʿahs since I saw you last year praying them as two." So ʿUthmān feared that ignorant people would think the prayer is only two rakʿahs, whereas he had only ever completed it at Minā."
