Translation
✧ I was with Sahl b. Sa'd al-Sa'idi when he was told: "There was something between the Banu Amr b. Awf and the people of Quba." He said: "That was long ago. We were in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when he was told that there was something between the people of Quba, so the Prophet ﷺ went to them to make peace between them. He was delayed from the people, so Bilal said to Abu Bakr: 'Shall I call the iqama for prayer?' He said: 'As you wish.' So Bilal called the iqama, and the people put Abu Bakr forward. While he was praying, the Prophet ﷺ came and began to pass through the rows until he stood behind Abu Bakr. They began to clap, and Abu Bakr would not turn around during prayer, but when they clapped a lot, he turned around and saw the Prophet ﷺ standing behind him. The Prophet ﷺ gestured to him to continue praying as he was, so Abu Bakr stepped back, and the Prophet ﷺ came forward and prayed. When he finished, he said: 'What prevented you from remaining as you were when I ordered you?' He said: 'It is not fitting for the son of Abu Quhafa to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer.' Then the Prophet ﷺ said: 'What is this clapping in prayer? Tasbih is for men, and clapping is for women.'
