machine translationʿAbd al-Razzāq, from Ibn Jurayj, who said:

✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ: If the slave and the Bedouin do not recite the Qurʾān, may they lead in prayer those who come to them in their quarter? He said: "No, by my life, they may not lead." I said: If they recite only the Opening of the Qurʾān (Umm al-Qurʾān)? He said: "I fear that with it they have no understanding (fiqh), and that they are coarse and know nothing."
