Translation
✧ While a young man of the Ansar was feeding his water-carrying camel, Mu'adh b. Jabal began the night prayer. The young man set down his fodder, stood and performed ablution, and attended the prayer. Mu'adh started with Surah al-Baqarah. The young man prayed and then left Mu'adh, went back to his camel and fed it — or fed her. When Mu'adh finished, the young man came and reviled him and belittled him. Then he said: "I will go to the Prophet of God ﷺ and tell him about you." So we woke up and they both met with the Prophet ﷺ. Mu'adh mentioned his situation to him. The young man said: "We are people of work and occupation, and he prolonged for us; he began with Surah al-Baqarah." The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Mu'adh, do you want to be a tempter? When you lead the people, recite 'Glorify the name of your Lord the Most High,' 'By the night when it covers,' 'Recite in the name of your Lord,' 'By the morning brightness,' and the like of these." Then 'Abd Allah b. 'Ubayd b. 'Umayr said: The Prophet ﷺ called the young man and said: "O Mu'adh, supplicate," and he did. Then he said to the young man: "Supplicate." He said: "By God, I do not know what this murmuring of yours is, but by God, if I meet the enemy, I will be true to God." He met the enemy and was martyred. The Prophet ﷺ said: "He was true to God, and God was true to him."
